Welcome to the Swannay Brewery, where we make award-winning beers of all styles from our rustic farmstead in the northwesterly tip of Orkney’s mainland. Our flagship beer - the one Rob brewed first and still the beer we brew the most. Scapa Special is a classic pale ale with wide appeal.

Q: What is Orkney Bere?

The Orkney-grown Bere adds a minerally, almost salty flavour. Orkney comprises of 70 islands, 17 or 18 of which are inhabited. Each unique in its own way, locals and tourists travel internally by both sea and air.

Q: When is Orkney Brewery open?

Open From April - September. Our brewery is located on the northwesterly tip of Orkney’s mainland, a wind-battered area known as Swannay. Brewing in a rustic farmstead we’re in a unique location: showered in spray from the Atlantic Ocean in the winter and surrounded by fertile farmland in the summer.

Q: Why did crisp malt partner with Swannay Brewery?

Keeping the use of a locally sourced, much venerated barley crop is something that’s high on the list of priorities for both Swannay Brewery and Crisp Malt. So this was always going to be a perfect partnership. For us, it is always exciting to find a brewer that matches our values in the preservation of a heritage crop.

Q: Do you still sell beer in Orkney?

We’re proud that we have fantastic local support on Orkney and still sell around a quarter of all our beer on our home island. Far from our early days as a one-man, cask beer producing brewery; Rob, Lewis, and an enthusiastic team package beers into cask, keg, bottle and can for shipment throughout the UK and, increasingly, worldwide.

Dark Munro was the CAMRA 2007 Champion Beer of Scotland. Scapa Special was the CAMRA 2008 Champion Beer of Scotland. Orkney Blast was the CAMRA 2010 Champion Beer of Scotland. Orkney IPA was the CAMRA 2012 Champion Beer of Scotland with Orkney Best getting the silver medal.
