Accounting > logic. Product discounts (markdowns) are taken off the store's bottom line. Shipping a damaged item back and forth don't. I get asked daily to discount this or that whatever that's damaged or missing something and I almost always say no because I can protect our store's bottom line by sending it back and getting credit for it.
